FIELD TRIPS

Field Trip Information and Options

We are excited to welcome schools, homeschool groups, camps, and educational organizations to Second Sky! Our mission is to inspire curiosity, creativity, and discovery through hands-on STEAM activities, interactive exhibits, and collaborative learning experiences.

Our goal is simple: every student should leave having learned at least one new thing they can share with their family or classmates.

Second Sky is also an approved ESA (Empowerment Scholarship Account) provider, allowing eligible families and schools to use ESA funding for qualifying programs and educational visits.

Below you will find information about our field trip options, activities, and pricing. Once you have selected a preferred date, please contact us to begin planning your visit.

Lunch is included in the schedule for 3-hour and 4-hour field trips only.
The 2-hour field trip does not include a lunch break. Schools wishing to add a 30-minute lunch period may be requested but an additional rental fee will be added based on the size of the group.

Second Sky’s snack bar is available during field trips. To keep students focused, snack sales are usually limited to the scheduled lunch break and just before departure. Items available for purchase range from $1–$6.

Second Sky’s Outdoor Adventure Yard is a beautifully landscaped 1.25-acre play and exploration space designed to encourage imagination, movement, discovery, and hands-on learning. We are continually investing in new features and enhancements to create an exciting environment for children, families, and school groups.

Guests can enjoy a variety of interactive outdoor experiences, including:
✯ Large Ball Machine
✯ Rope Swing
✯ Geometric Climber
✯ Rhythm Table
✯ Chime Arc
✯ Monkey Bridge
✯ Tennis Ball Cannon
✯ Hide-in-a-Box
✯ Nebula Shroom Grove
✯ Zipline (School groups must provide adult supervision at the zipline at all times.)

We’re adding new play experiences and improving the landscape to make every visit to Second Sky even more engaging. Our goal is to provide a unique outdoor environment where children can explore, create, play, and learn through adventure.

Second Sky offers a variety of interactive indoor exhibits designed to encourage creativity, exploration, problem-solving, and imaginative play. Students are welcome to explore many of these experiences during their visit.

Guests can enjoy a variety of interactive indoor experiences, including:
⭒ Magnetic Wall Track
⭒ Watercolor Wall
⭒ Constellations Globe
⭒ Marvelous Marble Wall
⭒ Cardboard Fort Building
⭒ Drum Sound Machine
⭒ Reading Area featuring a variety of children’s books

Optional Activity for 5th grade or above students

Corn Hole Tournament: Corn Hole provides a fun and friendly competition that encourages teamwork, communication, strategy, and critical thinking. Second Sky staff will organize the tournament, while teachers and chaperones are asked to assist with scoring and supervision.

Creative Machines Factory Tours: A tour of the Creative Machines factory may be substituted for one station during the 4-hour visit. Tours are limited to students in 6th grade and above.

Students can express their creativity through an art project during their visit. We ask all groups to review the menu below and pick 1 activity.

Art Project Options

1. Large-Scale Creative Drawing– Students get to try designing a zoo, a farm or a small village.

2. Aircraft Craft (Decorative Model – Does Not Fly, grades 4-12)- A popsicle design that is fun to make but not really good to fly.

3. Coloring Themed Pre-Printed Designs (suggested for K-2nd)- We’ll provide many different themes of Holidays, Bubba the Toad, Animals or lots of other themed sheets which are fun to color.

4. Scratch & Reveal Art– (any age) Crayon resist art is a fun, easy technique that exploits the scientific principle that oil and water don’t mix.

5. Kinetic Sculpture (Small Mobile)- Making a small mobile out of acrylic pieces to make a small wind chime.

6. Clay Art (Small Sculpture or Pinch Pot)- Clay art is so fun and lets students be creative with what they want to make, like a small pot, a smiley face or a clay pizza.

A STEM project is a hands-on learning activity that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics to encourage exploration, experimentation, and problem-solving. We ask all groups to review the menu below and pick 1 activity.

STEM Project Options:

1. Making Oobleck- Explore non-Newtonian fluids and discover how materials can behave as both a liquid and a solid.

2. Making Magnetic Putty- Create metallic slime that responds to magnets while learning about magnetism and material science.

3. Fizzy Rocket Caps (Recommended for Younger Students K-3)- Use a simple chemical reaction to launch small rocket caps while learning about pressure and gas expansion.

4. Fizzy Rocket Ships (Recommended for 4th-8th)- Design and build miniature rockets powered by the reaction between water and Alka-Seltzer tablets.

5. Paper Rockets & Launcher- Construct paper rockets and launch them while exploring air pressure, force, and engineering design.

6. Optical Illusion Tops- Build spinning tops that demonstrate how our brains interpret color, motion, and visual perception.

Middle & High School STEM Class Options

Middle and high school groups select two 60-minute classes from the pathways below.

World of Engineering

Explore 10 engineering fields through hands-on projects and challenges.

  • Hands-on: Truss bridge design and load testing
  • Key concepts: Compression, tension, redundancy, and efficiency
  • Fields may include: Civil, aeronautical, mechanical, materials, chemical, electrical, computer science and software, optical, systems, and biomedical engineering

Optical Science

Discover how light works through experiments with mirrors, lenses, reflection, and optical illusions.

  • Hands-on: Design and build kaleidoscopes and periscopes
  • Key concepts: Reflection, symmetry, and mirror angles
  • Topics may include: Introduction to light and a laser maze; kaleidoscopes and periscopes; color, filters, and spectra; pinhole cameras; optical fibers and total internal reflection; microscopes and magnification; and lasers and diffraction

Cosmic Art

Learn the fundamentals of comic-book storytelling through drawing and design.

  • Hands-on: Design cosmic figures and develop an original concept
  • Key concepts: The basics of creating an original comic book
  • Activity: Create original images and a storyline

Upon arrival, students will gather in groups at the lunch tables inside Second Sky for a short welcome and safety briefing.

  1. Be kind.
  2. Share while using devices.
  3. Keep balls on the ground — do not kick or throw them toward ceiling fans.
  4. Do not climb on any items marked “Do Not Climb” for safety reasons.
  5. Always play safely.
  6. Stay within Second Sky boundaries.

We encourage a short round-table discussion at the end of your visit. Students can share which activity they enjoyed most and what they learned — reinforcing STEM/STEAM critical thinking in a fun, interactive way.

  1. Waivers:
Each student, teacher, and volunteer must complete a waiver using the link below:
    https://secondsky.org/waiver-2026/
